week 26: lasers and lightsabers

castle in Utsuki

LOVE THIS SHIMAI!!

こんにちは
Ready for the craziest week yet!? So this week we met this guy who lives at the top of a huge hill. We talked to him and he said "I'm not going to join your church." We were like "okay, do you like English?" And he took an eikaiwa flyer (more on him later). So we had a lot of crazy MIRACLES!  I can't even tell you how amazing this week was. We went to Utsuki to visit a member. She wasn't home but we dendoed around there, and it was really fun and right next to the ocean. We honestly were lead so many times. This transfer is Whitney Shimai's last one, she goes home on Friday. I can't express how much I love her and how much she has shaped my mission. She is amazing and America is lucky to get her back.  MAKE SURE TO READ THE STORY AT THE END IT IS CRAZY!

Spiritual keiken: Well, we had an amazing lesson with Waka Chan and Yoko Shimai! The spirit was so strong and they came to church!!! They came and so did Okamoto San (the guy who said he wouldn't join our church)! He came to eikaiwa (English class) and then came to church. He is a brain scientist! So way smart. He is writing a book on the brain. He said he read a paper about how church can change the behavior of humans and is really good for us (he used fancier english than that (he speaks english better than me sometimes))! So he came and stayed all 3 hours and set up return appointments!  Amazing miracle!

Funny keiken:  So every week we get on a train and go to Beppu for district meetings... there we learn more about teaching and being a missionary. Well, Whitney Shimai and I were on the train and this Chinese college student was surfing the train (trying to stand/balance while the train was moving without holding on to anything). And he suddenly pulls out his phone and puts it in front of Whitney Shimai's face and say "Do you know where this is?" in PERFECT English! We helped him and started talking to him, and he then decided he was coming with us to district meeting. He came and listened and shared his opinions and then went to lunch with all the missionaries!  It was so funny that this random guy we met on the train came to district meetings and had lunch with all of us! So fun!

CRAZY STORY:
So I have had an ingrown toenail for a while and I have tried everything in the book. The milk and bread last week relieved a lot of the pain, but guess what.... we ran out of bread! So the next morning I woke up and it hurts and it is infected and gross. So I put a bandaid on it and we went out to dendo. We had lunch with Ushijima Shimai (a member and a mom), so we decided to ask her if she had any ideas.. she saw my toe and next thing I knew, we were in a doctors office. They sent us to a specialist. So we went to the specialist... an hour later I had a numb toe and they were lasering out my ingrown toenail.... yes LASERS!  So now I have lots of meds and antibiotics... so craziest day yet. My toes kills because it was lightsabered, but it will be better later. Yeah I don't know if it is that exciting but thats my crazy story!

New words:
いしゃ(isha):doctor
ちゅうしゃ(chuusha):shot
いけん(iken):opinion

I know this church is true. Honestly I have seen God change people's hearts and I have had my heart changed a lot.
“The burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord” (Mosiah 24:15)
Heavenly Father doesn't take away our burdens but he makes them lighter and easier to deal with. On a mission I have learned this to be true. Our Father loves us so much he allows us to struggle to learn and grow! I know he loves each of you so much! Let Heavenly Father lighten your burdens and trials!  I love you all!

Love Thompson Shimai

Bits and pieces from family emails:
I'll for sure be staying in Oita, but getting a new companion. It will be hard to say goodbye to Whitney Shimai...I love her!
We had around 15 people at our English class this week!
The Chinese student we met is headed back to Hong Kong, but we gave him a Book of Mormon, showed him where the church is in Hong Kong and gave him the phone number....planting seeds!
The brain scientist is taking us to lunch today...so nice of him.
I got permission to wear sandals until my toe heals...hooray!!
